Fra Diavolo, when I look it up, means “Brother Devil”. It’s an Italian sauce that gives off a spicy heat, by cooking with crushed red pepper flakes combined with tomatoes and garlic. Seafood Fra Diavlo will then be a spicy seafood mix while here, we are making Shrimp Fra Diavolo! I’m breaking the Italian rules of not serving it over pasta. Instead, I saute up some fresh kale and zucchini noodles. Then I bring the healthy heat with this amazing mixture!
Let’s begin! Ingredients are shown below. Get yourself a good can of tomatoes. Then you’ll need red onion, sweet peppers, fresh garlic, mushrooms, kale and zucchini. Fresh ingredients for the best flavor!
The herbs and spices, gotta make it Italian with the oregano and basil and some parsley as well. Definitely gotta bring the Devil’s heat with the red chili peppers!
There are some great health benefits when cooking with spice! A look below is a great info graphic on hot chili peppers and the website link below it is fantastic for more information to read up on!
Saute some fresh garlic, red onion in olive oil combined with about 2 tsp of each oregano and basil.
Add the sliced peppers and mushrooms and allow to brown.
In a separate pan begin cooking the shrimp with garlic, olive oil, again about 1-2 tsp of each oregano and basil and of course, the red chili peppers!
Once the shrimp is almost completely cooked, add the mushroom, onion and pepper mixture.
I failed to take photos, but from here add the canned tomatoes to the shrimp mixture and allow all the flavors to simmer and combine wonderfully. I then put some kale and zucchini in the same pan that had the onion and mushroom mixture and sautee them just enough to soften and cook. As the shrimp fra diavolo is simmering over a low to medium heat, once the greens are cooked, place on a plate, pour the Shrimp Fra Diavolo with all it’s heat over the greens and serve! Add more heat if you dare by sprinkling more crushed red chili peppers over top.
Being nutritiously Well-Fed is so hot!!
