So being in Disney World, you have the option to eat a lot. And a lot of what you eat could be just a lot of junk! Sugar and sweets are offered everywhere, you can smell cotton candy around every turn a cute krispy treat in shape of Mickey, Mickey shaped ice cream and a Mickey Pretzel!
Most breakfast menus have the infamous Mickey Mouse waffles as an option and I have to tell you, the last time I was in Disney was in 2014 and I was pregnant with Kali, but didn’t know it yet. I was CRAVING a Mickey Mouse Waffle every day! I had one for breakfast, I was so happy and thought my craving had been satisfied. Then, the next morning, I couldn’t wait to have one again! They are good!
I feel that when I’m at any kind of amusement park, whether it be a theme park, the zoo or a sporting event, the food isn’t going to be any good. I keep my expectations at a subpar food level so not to be disappointed. Keeping this in mind is multiplied if I attempt to get anything reasonably healthy, I feel it will be super lame and overpriced. My opinion is similar to this about airports.
However, on our trip our food choices at Disney were very good! Although our resort meals, not so much. We ordered fish tacos and the “fish”, if it actually was fish, was battered and tasted like a chicken finger. So I was unimpressed by the pool-side menu food at the Wyndham. At the resort the next morning, it was just ok. I had a yogurt and coffee to get my day started and the yogurt was similar to a Starbucks yogurt. I would’ve enjoyed an egg breakfast more so, but we didn’t want a big sit-down, we wanted to get into the park as early as possible. So our quick eating options were limited.
We had brought apples for snacks into the park, but we didn’t want to carry around a big cooler or a ton of food. At the Animal Kingdom, after we did the Safari both kids needed a recharge and wanted something. I was so happy to find this great food stand! Nico did want Doritos, but they also offered bananas, oranges, apples, nuts, carrots/celery, cheese and little cherry tomatoes which Kali loves! Probably her favorite snacking choice when we’re at home. This was perfect!
By lunchtime at the Animal Kingdom we needed something quick, because my son was turning into a giant whiny pain-in-the-assosaurus! We found Restaurantosaurus in Dinoland.
My husband waited in line and we waited for him. My son was waiting a bit impatiently because you know, as kids do it, they’re not hungry until THEY’RE STARVING!!!!!!$%$&*#@!!!!!!!!! My husband finally arrived and explained the line that he had to wait in, just took him to another line to wait in, then he finally got to the food counter only to wait for a cashier to eventually get to him as she was taking two lines at once. This was a bit of a Disney fail. But I guess everyone was hungry all at once. Even the birds around the place were hungry too.
And a little secret I found at this eating stop, there’s an outlet here! On one of the outdoor seating porches. I didn’t need this today, I needed this yesterday at Magic Kingdom when my phone was slowly losing battery, but there’s not a single outlet (for obvious reasons) anywhere. But, here is one! It will probably be removed or covered eventually.
So my husband got us both chef salads with grilled chicken, a hard-boiled egg and a side of a bean corn salsa. The salads were delicious and filling! The salad greens were fresh, not soggy, they tasted great and all the meat and vegetables were fresh as well! The kids had chicken tenders with fries, delicious too! Besides the wait being horrendous, this was a good lunch stop!
My favorite, favorite food we found at Disney was at Magic Kingdom. After riding the Pirates of the Caribbean, right across the street was Tortuga Tavern. There, they serve Turkey Legs! At $11 a leg! They were huge, smoked and delicious! I had no idea, but these turkey legs are infamous! I didn’t take a picture and I’m so mad at myself that I didn’t capture myself or my family devouring these meaty legs like we were characters straight out of Disney’s Brave, but my phone was almost out of battery so I was trying to conserve it. And I was so hungry and so impressed by my Paleo Disney food option, I just kept eating and smiling! I love good meat, I love smoked meat and I don’t love crap fake meat like hot dogs or unimpressive hamburgers or lame chicken meals. This was good meat! It was what you’d expect from a smoked bbq restaurant! Here’s a photo I found from the internet:
And I did read an article that there’s a rumor the meat is not turkey, but actually emu. Here’s an article that debunks that rumor: Turkey Leg is not Emu Meat. If it is emu, it’s damn good smoked emu! I’m sure, actually I’m positive there’s worse items in other foods one eats on a daily basis. We love to smoke ribs at our house, I make bbq pulled pork so I’m thinking of doing this copy-cat recipe this summer!
For dinner our last evening we drove over to Disney Springs and went to Bongos Cuban Cafe. SO GOOD! I had the Mojo Marinated Pulled Pork and loved it so much I actually made a paleo copy-cat recipe when we got home, I’ll post it soon! I didn’t get any pics of my food but I did get an outstanding video of our dancing dinner dates!!! Music, entertainment, kids loved it. They had chicken tenders (again) but these chicken tenders had a nice flavor to them and great meat! And apparently the place is a good time later at night, just click on this link to the website —-> It’s a party!
The morning we were leaving, we wanted to see Old Key West Resort at Disney Springs to see if maybe on our next trip back, we’d want to stay there. We made a quick reservation at Olivia’s for breakfast.
Loved it! Super good meal! I had an omelet, finally my egg breakfast I’ve been wanting every morning! There was nothing left. Nico was on a mission to get French Toast, and on the menu they had only a Banana Bread French Toast; banana bread made into french toast, then smothered with bananas and syrup. I thought that might be a little too much banana for him and our waiter, without hesitation, said “Oh, I’ll tell them just to make regular French Toast.” And Nico was happy!
Sadly we’re on our way to the airport and on our way home. Thanks for the best vacation! See you soon Mickey and Minnie! Till next time, we’ll keep your ears in our hearts!!!
